SCM- Storage charges for containers at terminal and stacking/movement charges.


Most business expand with a new manufacturing facility or new office.

Terminals unfortunately do not have the luxury to expand the port and neither easy to setup another port, which is very unlikely to be efficient. When volumes increased, they came up with a brilliant idea to stack container. Thanks to the reachers and forklifts machines making this possible.

So with same space 400 square foot (40'*10') they managed to make more money for 4 containers stacked easily; even more stacking in few terminals. Consider this as a grace and efficiency which a terminal might have to use to meet of certain targets.

When the containers in between have to be moved, restacking charges are charged. Since the terminals were unable to expand, to their convenience stacking was implemented. Now that it's the reason to make the container on top of container to be moved, why should the liner or container owner pay for such moves!

Time to challenge status quo.

SCM and Production facility

In a world where decentralization of few production facilities are not viable, lot of care should be taken on what's the best SCM model to be used for production. This data has to be fed back to the manufacturers of B2B machine makers and so on such that, they also optimize what's in best interest of what can be put into a container. Observed an instance where a product was produced with a width of 1300mm, which would be standing in a container. Compared to a 1000mm production part, 1300mm production part would add lot of meaning to the production capacity by 30% with little more space and other utilities. However containers are standardized at 8.5' and high cube 9.5' and likely to remain this way. Therefore the machine producing any part that are extensively shipped throughout the world through containers, should be optimized.  I'm sure we join together to optimize many such products and optimize the resources.
